LEFT SIDED COLONOSCOPY

LEFT SIDED COLONOSCOPY

This is a limited examination of the bowel which does not require a full bowel preparation. Instead of taking laxatives at home, an enema is given on arrival to clear out the lower part of the bowel.

This test is designed to look at only a small portion of the colon, and is used where the history suggests the answer will be found within that portion of the bowel , eg colitis or haemorrhoids.

In certain circumstances, it may not be safe for a person to take the laxatives for a full colonoscopy, or may not be safe for them to undergo a full colonoscopy due to other medical conditions - a left sided colonoscopy may be used in that circumstance.

The procedure is very quick - about 5 minutes - and is done without sedation except in rare cases. As no sedation is given, fasting is not required, and you will be able to eat straight away and travel home alone after the test.
